CAMP press conference

RADIO, PRINT MEDIA HEAR ABOUT FIGHT TO OPEN CAMP BUILDING
At a press conference today, spokespersons for CAMP([search]) told of their struggles to open a south-side community center committed to diversity and serving the community. Speaking for CAMP (Community Arts and Media Project) were: Susie Parker of the Gateway Green Alliance, Art Fiedrich of the St. Louis Independent Media Conference, Daniel "digger" Romano of Confluence([search]), and Laura Egerdal, a CAMP resident and volunteer.

Journalists present were Matt Sepick (sp?) of KWMU radio (90.7 FM) and Jim Merkle of the Suburban Journals. They asked CAMP spokespeople why the city was denying an occupancy permit for the building. Afterwards, they were given a tour of the building.

CAMP will be facing an appeals hearing on Sept. 14 in hopes of gaining an occupancy permit for use of the first floor - the community center section of the huge building that CAMP bought and rehabbed with volunteer effort. We need your support! The board will be looking at zoning ordinances and local interest, and we need supporters to please come to this hearing.

The appeals hearing will be held at City Hall Room 208, on September 14th, 2005, at 1:30 pm. The Community Arts and Media Project (CAMP) may soon
be open as a resource to serve the people of St. Louis. CAMP is a non-profit grassroots organization that will be a venue for diverse and creative ideas, workshops, exhibitions, and collaborations, with the grand vision of fostering the development of existing communities.
