I attended two vigils. The first at the Alternative Music Pub where there were 60 people. Then we raced over to the church on Grand and Lindell and there were over 360 people attending that vigil.

Thanks, Betsy! Glad to see it!

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

I always find it a bit presumptous when parents bring their little children to ralleys or protests. The children are not informed enough to make decisions regarding their own opinions and in that void parents use them for their own agendas. It's sad, and bad parenting to boot. If you want to teach your children your beliefs, do it at home or in more appropriate venues while they are still at such a young age. If you want to see the worse possible example of this head over to the Hope Clinic for Women on a Saturday morning and look at anti-choice parents having their children hold up giant photoshopped billboards of mutilated fetuses - now THAT'S got to be bad on a developing mind...

Kids at Vigils

I bring my kids places that are important to me. I also bring my kids with me because I work all day and want to spend time with them in the evening. There is nothing violent or explicit about a peace rally. I am showing my kids my values when I take them such places and this is important to me. Parenting is modeling. I believe in peace and in activism. When my kids are 13, 15, 18, and want to stay home instead of going to a vigil I will be fine with that. If they want to disagree with me, that will be fine too. IF they want to enlist in the military, this will also be their choice. I'm not going to leave my kids at home when something important is happening in this country that I feel strongly about. If a vigil became violent or illegal, I would also take them home. These candlelight vigils are peaceful, relevant, and an important thing for my children to see.

Teaching Kids

The Only Place for Teaching Kids?
While I appreciate your comment regarding using children to display mutilated fetuses, I suggest that the way to teach our children the values we want them to learn is to teach by example. Not just in the home or "more approriate venue". The teaching of peaceful conflict resolution must be a 60 minutes per hour/24 hour a day lesson, in any venue without graphic images of violence.
I wish you peace.

Re: Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

I guess you would rather send your kids off to war? Children are naturally going to be taught their parents values and share their experiences. Let's just hope there are more parents like these that teach peace, rather than war.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

America Stands With Cindy? WTF? Why do people need to tie their beliefs to a nonsensical figurehead? You can make a much stronger point by stating concrete beliefs rather than latch onto a flash-in-the-pan media tool. In two weeks Bush is heading back to DC, and in three weeks no one will even care about Cindy. Protest the war, hell, even protest the troops if that is what you believe, but don't wrap yourself in the cloak of a grieving mother simply because she's recently received a little attention from the media. Come to think of it, if you do, you are no better than those bloodsuckers in the media. In fact, you're worse!

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

yeah, but hippies are so desperate to be heard that they end up doing the same shit the media does. hypocrites.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

btw, am i the only one who knows that cindys son was a hired killer? he killed people for money, end of story.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

Hired killer? ... Are you a complete idiot? America's military men and women are public servants who swore an oath to obey the orders of the President of the United States and the officers appointed over them. They put aside personal beliefs for the common good.

I'm sure you weren't complaing when these "hired killers" were slinging sandbags during the floods of '93 and '98 ... or when they responded to other natural disasters (hurricanes, tornados, etc) ... or when they were pulling wounded bodies out of the rubble at the WTC or Pentagon in 2001.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

How unfortunate, people get on the newswire just to nitpick. At least there's some debate now.

Cindy Sheehan: she is a lightning rod, a symbol, and a real mother who is going beyond grief to resistance. Everybody knows the "America stands with Cindy" is not just about her, just as her struggle is not just about her son, but about ending the U$ occupation of Iraq. Nitpickers left and right are sniping from the sidelines.

Volunteer soldiers: in my opinion, the truth is somewhere between "hired killer" and "honorable public servant." The choices people make are influenced by a lot of factors including income, indoctination, ethical considerations, inborn and socialized psychological makeup, etc. I chose not to go into the military because I had the good fortune of learning about U$ foreign policy in Central America during high school. Most people didn't get that chance; they got pro-American indoctrination. How many of us can say that we were 100% responsible for our choices at age 17? Yet, the U$ military's primary duty has been, since the beginning, to protect and extend wealth for those who have a lot and deprive it from those who have little. This is a historical fact which all should recognize; we must cut through the haze of patriotic propaganda. The ACLU fights for my rights far moreso than the U$ military.

The question is: how do we handle soldiers and their families in order to get the results we want? Who doesn't find it in one's best interest to hold one's tongue, to closely gauge one's words, in some situations?

I would gladly support mandatory national service if it were for assisting in natural disasters; I would not support a draft for imperialist wars.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

I forgot one thing: taking kids to protests. I shudder when I see right wingers take their kids to anti-abortion protest or patriotic rallies, but I do the same thing. Basically, it's no big deal. We should think it no big coup for our cause if there is a child holding a sign we agree with; nor should we be shocked and offended when someone on the other side of the issue does the same thing.

Despite what some libertarian types might think, raising a child is a fundamentally authoritarian activity. We can do it in a more-or-less benevolent manner, but, the truth is, parents have more experience, more knowledge, and know what it is a child must cultivate, endure, overcome, to become a decent adult.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

hey vet. no, i am not an idiot. i am stating a fact. he chose a job where he was a)paid and b)trained to kill people. that makes him a hired killer. if a professional assasain helps me paint my house, he is still a hired killer. you can judge him or not, but that is what they are.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

So what if Cindy is now an activist? Why should she be chosen to represent any type of movement? She is nothing but a DISTRACTION from the real issues, and her motherhood is an excuse for people to shrug her off as still being inthe stages of greif - a form of "temporary hysteria". The only reason she has gotten any attention is simple - she is a white, upper-middle class woman. Same reason why a white woman running out on her fiancee gets months of coverage and a missing black girl gets page 4. Cindy has brought NOTHING new to the table. When you attach yourself to a temporary figurehead all you end up doing is driving attention away from the real cause. People are discussing HER, then her SON, then her HUSBAND, then the rancher NEXT DOOR, then the PORTA-POTTIES, then DOVE HUNTERS, then a guy in a TRUCK that ran over some crosses, then the lack of PARKING, then the town of CRAWFORD... and then review for Deuce Bigelow. Hmmm... what did we forget...

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

So did the kid with the "Kids for Peace / Bring Troops Home" sign think that up himself, make the sign, print it out, and carry it on his own will? Did he sit there and consider the repercussions of a full pullout in the middle east? Does he understand the delicate situation, regardless of the cause, that exists over there right now?

Or are mommy and daddy using him as a surrogate mouth and a means to up the head count?

Kids have no place in politics.

As Constructive As Protesting War

This is as constructive as protesting war.

protest3.jpg
This is as constructive as protesting war. Seriously, you have just as much chance of changing the outcome...

we'll see

If you believe this protest has no bearing on the war, I invite you to post again in a couple of months. Bush's approval ratings are slipping to record lows and confidence in this war is down to less than 30% in this country. If Republicans expect any of their own to have a chance in the next major electiosn in 2006 and 2008, the Iraq situation will change. Mark my words, Cindy Sheehan has given the movement new enthusiasm and a new voice and it will change what is currently happening in Iraq. Protesting will speed the end this occupation.
Incidentally, protesting is what ended segregation and gave women the vote. It is the most effective tool of the people, just watch and wait if you don't believe me.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

"Cindy has brought NOTHING new to the table."

She's the first person I've heard get to mention PNAC on CNN.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

What does that mean? Do you watch CNN 24/7? Do you know PNAC has never been even mentioned on CNN before? Or are you using personal experience as evidence?

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

It's taken me awhile to post some counter comments because:

a) I was busy forgetting all of my military training except the "killing" part. You're an idiot, hipster doofus.
b) I was busy re-educating myself on U$ foreign policy because there's no way an educated person from America's public school system could discern/understand such intricate details. Ever heard of the global economy? You're damn right that it's a battle between the "haves" and the "have nots". Those who choose to toil away in the jaws of economic disparity, whether due to religous beliefs or cultural ineptness, tend to be our enemies. The "have nots" are ripe for the pickin' by terrorists whose ideologies tend to do more with attacking the well-to-do than any real platform... from Al-Sadr to Bin Laden and from Hitler to Stalin.
c) I've also been too busy worrying over my President's approval ratings. Holy smokes ... they're at 45% (source: MSNBC). Oh wait ... the latest Gallup Poll shows Mrs. Sheehan's approval ratings (both for her cause and her PR) at 34% (source: MSNBC). It's a good thing we all don't base our action on public opinion.

Again, I grieve for those who have lost loved ones in this global war on terror. Conversly, I cringe at the thought of anyone using the loss of life for political gain. Her son VOLUNTEERED to serve. Her son VOLUNTEERED to place his desire to serve over his personal beliefs.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

but i am still right. all of your training is fine and dandy, but you are also a hired killer. at least you were. now you are a retired hired killer.

its funny, im pretty sure the ten commandments doesnt say

Thou shall not kill, EXCEPT....

fuck you, vet. you are a hired killer. no matter what you do, you killed other people and got paid for it. you accepted money to take the lifes of other human beings. you killed people with mothers, fathers, children, friends, memories, hopes, aspirations. i hope they sleep with you every night, murderer.

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

Jesus, doofus. Calm down already. Smoke another joint or something. The NAZIs were murderers. What are we suppossed to do, sit back and let ourselves get killed?

Re: Pictures from Cindy Sheehan Rallies

Hey, hipster doofus, let me correct your assumptions which were made without a factual base.

I am not retired. I have served 14 years, and continue to serve. Once again, you're an idiot.

Even during my 15 months in Iraq, I never had to shoot anyone. I patrolled over 48K miles, led 112 missions (served on an additional 78 missions), and worked in a variety of environments (Fallujah, Ballad, Al Kut, Baghdad, An Nasariyah, etc). You base your assumption that all Iraqi veterans had to use their weapons to kill. I'm assuming that your only basis for your assumptions lie in the third and fourth hand accounts of the media. Once again, you're an idiot.

I assisted father, mothers, sons, and daughters with their hopes, dreams, and aspirations. My fellow soldiers and I built roads and schools, provided medical care, interacted, trained secruity forces, destroyed left over munition stockpiles, etc. What did you do? And so, you're idiocy continues.

The Ten Commandments do say "thou shall not kill". And that's typical of a thinly laid, poorly researched argument. God, throughout the recordings of the Bible, struck down and supported others to strike down those who were against His will and His people. God's word is much deeper than your hip pocket guide to religion, and so remain an idiot.

I sleep very well at night. I have a job, a family, a life, and a future. You, on the other hand, appear to have no grasp on facts or reality. So, in my eyes, you remain an idiot.
