1) a veggie diesel engine/generator can be paired with an electric motor. Railroad locomotives have done that for decades. (BTW, my Jetta TDI consistently gets 43mpg city/highway without my adopting any special driving habits)
2) biodiesel made from crops is using a food source to power transportation. So, waste vegetable oil as a part of detoxing from our gasoline addiction seems preferable to me.
